Tomorrow is Good Friday, a day of the year which is sombre and painful so why do we call it ‘good?’ It is a day of betray, of pain, of death, of sin, of suffering, of conviction, of flogging, of abuse, of soldiers, of mocking, of Jesus. Every year we have the same day and the remembrance of the same event but every year I am in awe of this event. As the years go by I seem to learn more and more about this event and I am amazed at the death of Jesus and His love for us. Jesus was and is the suffering servant of God, He came down to this earth so that we are able to be in a family with Him, He came so that we are able to live, He came so that we can have a father, He came so that we can carry on with our lives and nothing can be better than that.
When things get hard do you run away? When you are suffering do you want the time to go and to move away from it? Jesus did not come to earth to run away from suffering because otherwise He would not have come to earth if He was not here to suffer. He came to the earth for the sake of everyone, He came for you, your mother, your father, your family, your children, He came for everyone. He died for the sake of our sins so that we can be redeemed, so that we can live with Him, so that we can be free from the bonds of our sin. This day should not be as gloomy as we think it should be because we can have a hope that one day we will be with Jesus in heaven.
Some days when we find it hard to keep on going, we find it hard to stick by what we believe and some days will be harder than others. Jesus is the prime example, He never let His father go, He never renounced His father, He trusted fully that God was in control and that He knew what He was doing. Instead of arguing, He prayed, He prayed for those people who hurt Him, He prayed for those people who abused Him, He prayed for strength to keep on going, He prayed to show love to other people, He prayed that He would be able to keep on going, He prayed for the sins of His people. As much as it is hard to realise this we were the ones that kept Him on the cross, we were the ones that hung Him to the cross.
It was because of our sin that Jesus went to the cross. It was because of our disobedience He went to the cross. It was because of our lies Jesus went to the cross. It was because of our bad language that Jesus went to the cross. It was because of our shouting that Jesus went to the cross. It was because of our actions that Jesus went to the cross. It was because of our thoughts that Jesus went to the cross. It was because of our deceit that Jesus went to the cross. It was because of our selfish desires Jesus went to the cross. It was because of us Jesus went to the cross. How often have you thought about that-YOU sent Jesus to the cross. However, it was because of Jesus’s death that we can now be free, we can be free from sin, we can be free from Satan, we can be free from hell. What an amazing thing. If we trust in Jesus and His death then we are able to be free from all the things that tie us down to the sin of the life that we live.
Good Friday is a day that we should be able to rejoice because God has been able to change the world, God has bee able to change the future of all humankind because of the death that Jesus died. We often find pain as hurtful but it is often through pain that things that come out good and good things happen to those people. It is Gods will for our lives that Jesus died for us. Sometimes we have to give up our ‘good’ life in order to live forever with God and Jesus. We should not count Good Friday as the end of today or our life but the beginning, we should be thankful for the love and death of Jesus so that we are able to live.
